All in all, worth seeing in the cinema and I look forward to part 2. Watching this on a TV when it is eventually released is going to be a challenge. The colour palette of the film is very much earth tones and dark throughout. Given the overall look and tone of the movie a bit more adult consideration of the violence would be appreciated. I don't know if there is a deliberate attempt to keep the gore to a minimum for certification purposes but some more blood and guts would have complemented the style.
The humour is not as "in your face" as some of the Hollywood versions but there are definitely laughs in here and there is a degree of subtlety which I appreciated The fight scenes have benefited from some "Bournesque" stylising but, and I hesitate to write this, everything is somewhat bloodless. Before he dies, he begs Karigan to deliver the life and death message he bears to King Zachary. As the young man lies dying on the road, he tells Karigan he is a Green Rider, one of the legendary messengers of the king of Sacoridia. You might like the Firekeeper series by Jane Lindskold, less of a focus on swordfighting but more discovery/re-discovery of magic and kind of has the same cozy 'I really like just being around these. A good tight script with some excellent characters and superb performances. The rider is slumped over his mounts neck, impaled by two black-shafted arrows. Im also a huge fan of Green Rider and similar - thick classic fantasy with a female lead. She answered the call two years after receiving her brooch from a dying Green Rider and stopped a coup against the King. Is this version worth your time? In my opinion yes. Green Riders Karigan G’ladheon is the heir of Clan G’ladheon, and Chief Rider of the Green Riders, the King’s messenger service.
If you have seen any previous Three Musketeers movie then you know the story.
